Greene Hills Gators

Jobs

Many workers are needed to successfully run a swim meet. When you sign your child up to participate on Greene Hills Swim Team you are agreeing to help run our swim meets. We ask that each parent help by selecting one of the jobs listed below, and being available to fulfill that job during each swim meet. If you only have one child swimming, only one parent needs to work one-half of each meet. If you have more than one child swimming, we ask that both parents each work one-half of each meet, or one parent work the entire meet. Some jobs are only required for home meets. Please note that some jobs require that you attend a JSL clinic.

We try to give everyone his or her first choice when possible. We will be placing a notice in your child's mailbox, prior to the mock meet, notifying you of your assigned job(s) for each meet.

So pick a job of your choice, and be prepared to come and join in on the fun with your children at swim meets this summer.

MEET DIRECTOR - Supervises all home dual/tri meets and ensures that the meets are conducted in accordance with U.S. Swim technical rules and/or regulations and the JSL Bylaws. He/she is ultimately in charge of all home meets. He/she ensures that the pool area is properly prepared, and that adequate supplies and personnel are available to run the meet. Also serves as the visiting team Meet Director at away meets. Meet directors are encouraged to attend all JSL pre-season clinics.

STARTER - Operates the Colorado Timing Start System, directing swimmers when to "Step up on the Block," "Take your marks," and "Go." JSL requires starters to be either USS or YMCA certified or have attended a USS, YMCA or JSL clinic for starters within the current calendar year,

CLERK-OF-COURSE - Is responsible for getting the swimmers arranged in heats for their events. She/he receives the event cards from the coaches, and arranges them prior to the start of the meet. Once the meet starts, she/he calls the swimmers to the clerk-of-course and sits them on benches in the order that they will swim. She/he directs swimmers to the area behind the blocks so that there is always one heat waiting, keeping the meet running without delay. Clerks are encouraged to attend JSL Clerk-of-Course clinics.

STROKE-&-TURN JUDGE - Walks abreast of swimmers and observes U.S. Swim rules for style of swimming designated strokes and correctness and completeness of turns. He/she reports

any violations on a DQ card, and explains to the swimmer the reason for disqualification. JSL requires Stroke-and- turn Judges to be either USS or YMCA certified or have attended a USS, YMCA, or JSL clinic for Stroke- and-turn Judges within the calendar year,

ESCORTS TO THE CLERK-OF-COURSE - In order to keep things running smoothly with no delays, caused by trying to locate a swimmer for their event at the last minute, we have two to four parents call the swimmers to a pre-Clerk-of-course. They obtain the timer cards from the Clerk-of-course, and call the swimmers, give them their cards, and seat them on benches by heat ready to go to the Clerk-of- course.

SWEEP JUDGES - Are used to determine the order of finish. Two sweep judges from each team are stationed on each side of the pool, having a clear view of the finish line. One judge observes and calls the order of the finish (for each race) while the other judge assists and records the order of the finish on a card.

FALSE START ROPE - One person is assigned to the false start rope. He/she drops the false start rope immediately upon hearing the false start signal from the starter, and then resecures the false start rope after the swimmers stop and return to the blocks.

TIMER - A timer clocks the time of each swimmer in their lane. There are three timers per lane: two timers from the home team and one timer from the away team. One timer from the home team has a clipboard and records the time from each timer for each heat. The Timer should:

1. Verify the name, event, heat, and lane on the card given to the timer by the swimmer.

2. Reset watch and be prepared to time at the beginning of each race.

3. Start watch from the flash of light (not sound).

4. Raise hand if not ready before race or watch is not functioning properly to get assistance from head timer.

5. Stop watch when swimmer touches end of pool (being aware that many races are multilap events).

6. Read watch and give time to timer with the clipboard to record time.

7. Encourage each swimmer to exit the pool, and assist swimmers that

need help (especially the younger swimmers).

TABLE PERSONNEL - This job is very important for recording the results of the meet. There are several tasks for this job including sorter, recorder, scorer and ribbon writer. There is a head-of-table who will instruct the table people what is to be done. She/he will assist when problems arise. The table receives the timer cards, the sweep judge cards, and the DQ cards and determines point and ribbon distribution for each team.

DECK RUNNER - Two runners from the home team assist in gathering the various cards from timers and judges to take to the scoring table. The runner:

1. Collects the following after each heat:

a. "DQ " cards from the Stroke-and-turn judges.

b. Sweep judge cards from the Sweep judges.

c. Timer cards from the Timers.

2. Takes cards immediately to the sorter at the table.

3. Returns to collect more cards.

4. Assists in collecting timer cards from swimmers to transfer to timers at opposite end of pool in 25-meter events.

COMPUTER PERSONNEL - This person must know how to use a computer. All times are entered into the computer using Hy-Tek software. It has not been determined if we will be entering the times during the meet or soon afterwards.

REFRESHMENTS - We set up a refreshment table at each home meet. This helps to bring in money for our team, and provides nutrition for our swimmers. Parents are asked to bring in donations of items like baked goods, pasta or fruit salads, drinks, granola bars, fruits, etc. (There will be a list posted on the bulletin board of requested items prior to each home meet). We usually grill chicken, and sell pizza. There is a head refreshment person who organizes the food purchases and the jobs. We need workers to sell food and drinks, set up and operate the grill, pick up the pizzas, distribute drinks to the other meet workers, etc.
